Ophthalmologist Sees Move to New Office Requires Paperless Approach

Until 2007, David Gorman, MD, an ophthalmic surgeon in a solo practice in Manhattan, used paper records. But then before he renovated and moved to a new office, he had to relocate his practice to smaller, temporary quarters. The smaller office lacked the requisite storage for his extensive files.

Clearly, Gorman had a problem. He needed to move to the new office and the only way to do so was to relocate to the temporary office that lacked the room for his paper records. Seeking advice from a technology consultant, Gorman contacted our company, Advanced Computer Technologies (www.act-tek.com) in Roseland, N.J. We work with many physician practices seeking to implement electronic medical record (EMR) systems and suggested an EMR that would not only solve Gorman’s space problem, but also increase his practice’s efficiency. For Gorman and his seven-member staff, the EMR has indeed made them more efficient, allowing Gorman to go home in the evening and spend more time with his family rather than working on completing paper charts.

Improving Office Workflow
“The EMR that we installed was a godsend,” Gorman says. “It certainly is more efficient.” Better still, the conversion to the EMR was quick and easy. “We installed the EMR, scanned the charts, and then moved,” he comments. “We moved our server with the two remote laptops. I was operating on Friday, and on Saturday morning I walked into the new location to see the post-ops. I just turned on the laptop and it worked.”
